New Mexico Helping Ukraine (NMHU) is a recently developed nonprofit organization which is made up
of a Board of Directors and a diverse, multi-national group of members who are dedicated to providing
humanitarian relief to the people of Ukraine. Ever since February 24, 2022, the day that Russia began its
unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, NMHU has been assisting and helping Ukrainian citizens (and its
military) by shipping donations from New Mexico to Ukraine. For the last several months, NMHU has
been busy collecting and shipping much needed medical supplies to an even larger organization based in
Chicago known as Help Razom, “razom” meaning “together.” The NMHU Directors remain grateful to
have this collaborative relationship.
That said, we would like the state of New Mexico to be recognized as one of many the states which are
currently helping Ukraine to survive from Russian aggression, invasion, and occupation. I myself, Luda
Kostyk, a proud American-Ukrainian and President of NMHU refuse to stand by and ignore the human
suffering and misery that is taking place. In addition, as a practicing nurse, I decided that I must help
transform my anger and energy into actions that effectively help the people of my Homeland -- to
survive from injury of any kind. Fighting for freedom, unfortunately, this is not easy. The Russian
Terrorist State that it is, has brought nothing but tears, blood, death, injury, mutilation, and destruction
to the people of Ukraine. Only the very brave Ukrainian Defense Army can stop the Russians. What’s
more, in Ukraine’s fight to defend its sovereign land, families and everything about their country, the
Ukrainian Defense Army continues to block Russia from moving into other post-Soviet countries and
Europe. To help survive this unprovoked (and quite uneven battle), NMHU is helping to save lives by
sending life-saving tourniquets, “SAM” junctional tourniquets, individual first-aid kits, and thermal
undergarments for the Ukrainian Defense Army, and for civilians as well. Due to the nature of these
medical items, such supplies are ordered, not donated.
Some of the more specific medical items that NMHU is able to collect from the public include wound
care items, surgical necessities, respiratory care supplies and other medical items related to
ortho/ostomies in addition to catheters, needles, tubes, drains, rehabilitation supplies (splints, boots,
crutches, walkers) and adults dippers. Medication such as NSAIDS, Acetaminophen, Tylenol, Aleve, any
vitamins (non- expired), hydration electrolyte drink mixes are also collected.
NMHU team also collect items such as:
used soldier uniforms/boots,
warm socks, T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, warm undergarments, power banks, rechargeable flashlights,
night-vision lights, isothermal rescue blankets, hygiene items, dehydrated meat such as beef jerky, and
other items required for survival.
